Russia. This individual committed suicide by strangulation with a zip tie, a self-locking cable tie. Strangulation is a type of mechanical asphyxia produced by constriction of the neck using ligature material, without suspending the body. Suicidal strangulation with a zip tie is a rare but possible method of self-harm leading to death. A zip tie, typically used for securing items, can be tightened around the neck, cutting off blood flow and oxygen, leading to asphyxia.

The tightness of the zip tie can cause the victim to lose consciousness quickly, though death usually results from prolonged lack of oxygen to the brain. Unlike other methods, zip ties can be difficult to loosen once tightened, making escape unlikely. Strangulation marks from a zip tie tend to be narrower and more uniform than those from hands or ropes. Forensic investigation includes examining the injury, presence of other signs of self-harm, and psychological factors. Suicidal strangulation with a zip tie may be considered when there is no evidence of external involvement, but it is important to rule out homicide or other causes of death.
