2018 – Argentina. A 62 year old motorcyclist died after getting stuck to the rear underride guards of a truck and dragged 40km(25 miles). The truck driver, a 41 year old Brazilian national driving for Brazilian company Multi Armazens, was arrested but could not explain what happened. The driver of the truck had not noticed that he and the victim bumped into each other earlier. The police had been informed of a mangled motorcycle on the road but no body could be found. About 40 minutes later the truck was stopped by border police officers after a Road Safety Patrol noticed the man hanging from the truck. The accident happened on the National Road 14 between the towns of Gobernador Virasoro, where the motorcycle was found, and near a toll booth close to San José. The victim was a municipal worker in Gobernador Virasoro.

Being accidentally dragged by a vehicle for a long distance is a highly dangerous and often fatal situation. When a person is dragged along the road, their skin and underlying tissues come into direct contact with the rough surface. This can cause severe abrasions, often stripping away multiple layers of skin and muscle. These injuries can expose bones and internal structures, leading to significant pain, infection risks, and blood loss. The force of being dragged can cause bones to break, joints to dislocate, and internal organs to be damaged. The repetitive impact of the body hitting the road or other objects while being dragged increases the likelihood of fatal injuries. If the person’s head hits the ground or other objects, it can result in skull fractures, brain injuries, or concussions, all of which can be fatal.

Friction from being dragged generates significant heat, which can cause thermal burns on the skin and deeper tissues. These burns compound the severity of injuries and increase the risk of shock. Abrasions and other traumatic injuries can lead to severe bleeding. Without immediate medical intervention, blood loss can lead to hypovolemic shock and death. The longer the distance, the greater the extent of injuries. Even a short dragging incident can be fatal if the head or vital organs are affected.
