Occasionally, the floating decomposed body may present with the anterior side up allowing the face, chest, and abdomen to be exposed to the air and sun resulting in a dry, darkened, leathery, and sunburnt appearance. The exposed skin of bodies unprotected from strong sun exposure or are otherwise indoors will, in the earlier postmorterm period, have a yellow parched appearance that will gradually shrink, darken, and harden exhibiting a mummified appearance.
