Brazil. A man was shot multiple times in the head while relaxing in a hammock. Brazil has one of the highest homicide rates in the world, though it’s declined in recent years. Killings are often linked to organized crime, drug trafficking, and conflicts between rival gangs, especially in urban areas like Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Fortaleza. Firearms are used in most homicides. Police violence and extrajudicial killings are also a serious problem, with many deaths occurring during so-called “operations” in favelas. Poverty, inequality, and corruption contribute heavily to the violence. Despite occasional crackdowns and public security reforms, conviction rates remain low, and impunity for murder is widespread across much of the country.
