Probes are effective in demonstrating the paths of projectiles through the body. All cutaneous wounds must be photographed at low and high power prior to any physical intervention such as the insertion of probes. Wounds on the extremities may be probed unless dissection is required to identify injuries to specific structures such as the femoral artery; the dissection must come first to prevent artifactual injury by the probe.
